Lessons from John 8: Salvation Exposes Sin

In our previous lesson, we came upon the scene of the woman caught in adultery and brought before Jesus. Now we see just her and Jesus left standing there.

Can you just imagine what must have been going through the mind of the woman as she stood there before Jesus?

Her accusers went away, condemned of their own sin, and she was left behind, face to face with Jesus, after having her sin also exposed. Now what was going to happen to her, she might have wondered.

And Jesus stood back up and asked her, “Woman, where are they?” In other words, Jesus asked her, “Where are your accusers?” “Has no one condemned you?” And she quietly answered, “No, sir.” “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Now go and leave your life of sin.”

Jesus did not condemn the woman accused of adultery, but neither did He ignore or condone her sin or behavior. He told her to leave her life of sin and offered her new life.

Jesus’ light of salvation frees us from sin’s crushing guilt.

John 3:16-17 remind us,

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

Jesus’ light of salvation exposes the sin in our lives. However, Jesus reveals our sins not to condemn us but to invite us to repent.

What specific sin has Jesus revealed to you recently, and how have you responded? Will you ask the Spirit for help and trust Him to empower you to leave that sin behind?

We “are what we are” because we are sinners, but we have hope for inner transformation through Jesus. Have you come into the light of His truth and do you see yourself as you really are? If so, then Jesus invites you to confess that you are indeed a sinner and in need of His salvation. Jesus beckons you to come into the light of His grace and receive His free gift of salvation and leave your life of sin behind.
