Lessons from John 8: Jesus Brings Light into a Dark World

In the conversation Jesus had with the religious leaders, He was saying was that He was not speaking on His own. He could have, being equal with God the Father. But instead, He was speaking that which the Father was saying to Him.

In others words, Jesus’ words were God’s words. Jesus came from heaven, where His Father resides and would return to be with Him there. Yet while on earth, Jesus was not separated from His Father.

This is important to us because the only way to know the Father is through the Son. And the only way to gain access to the Father is through the Son. Yet, verse 27 tells us they still did not understand that Jesus was telling them about His heavenly Father.

So Jesus said to them, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me. The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him.”

Jesus was talking about His death on the cross (and possibly even His resurrection from the dead and His ascension into heaven.) This was most significant event in history because it is through His death that our sins are forgiven.

Through His resurrection, death was defeated. And through faith in Him, we will ascend into heaven to be with Him. There we will see the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

And as Jesus spoke, verse 30 tells us that many put their faith in Him.

Jesus Christ is the source of light and life and His offer of salvation brings light and life into a dark world.

Those walking in spiritual darkness need the Light of the world to break through, which often happens through the witness of people. Through ordinary people like you and like me!

Who do you know who is walking in darkness? Is it you? Maybe a family member, a co-worker, a neighbor? How can you be a reflection of the light of Jesus in their lives, pointing them to His grace and mercy?

You can trust the Spirit to work through the witness of God’s people to bring the light of salvation to the lost.
